Laparoscopy (Keyhole Surgery)
Advanced Surgical Care
Laparoscopic (Minimally Invasive) Surgery
Laparoscopy is an advanced minimally invasive surgical procedure used to examine and treat conditions inside the abdomen and pelvis with high precision. Commonly known as keyhole surgery, this technique allows surgeons to perform procedures without large cuts, ensuring safer and quicker recovery.
During laparoscopy, a specialised instrument called a laparoscope—a thin tube with a camera and light—is inserted through a small incision. The camera transmits clear images to a monitor, enabling the surgeon to operate accurately with minimal tissue damage.
Benefits of laparoscopic surgery include:
- Smaller incisions with minimal scarring
- Reduced pain and blood loss
- Shorter hospital stay
- Faster recovery and return to daily activities
- Lower risk of complications compared to open surgery

Laparoscopy: Uses, Procedure & Safety
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the abdomen and pelvis. It allows doctors to view internal organs clearly and perform surgery with smaller incisions, less pain, and faster recovery.
Laparoscopy is commonly used for:
- Gynaecology: Diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the female reproductive system
- Gastroenterology: Evaluation and treatment of digestive system disorders
- Urology: Diagnosis and management of urinary system conditions
- Biopsy procedures: Removing tissue samples for further testing
- Surgical treatment: Removing damaged or diseased organs or tissues
👉 Laparoscopy offers accurate diagnosis with minimal downtime and quicker healing.
- The procedure is done under general anaesthesia, so you won’t feel any pain
- The surgeon makes small incisions in the abdomen
- A laparoscope (thin camera) and surgical instruments are inserted
- Carbon dioxide gas is gently introduced to improve visibility
- After the procedure, the gas is released, incisions are closed with stitches, and dressings are applied
Most patients can return home the same day, though some may require an overnight hospital stay.
Laparoscopy is a commonly performed and safe procedure, with a low risk of complications when done by an experienced surgeon.
Minor complications (1–2% of cases) may include:
- Mild infection
- Minor bleeding or bruising at incision sites
- Nausea or vomiting after anaesthesia
Rare but serious complications (about 1 in 1,000 cases) include:
- Injury to organs such as the bowel or bladder
- Damage to major blood vessels
- Complications related to carbon dioxide gas
- Allergic reaction to anaesthesia
- Blood clots in the legs (DVT) or lungs (pulmonary embolism)
- These complications are uncommon and can usually be managed effectively with prompt medical care.
- Ovulation disorders (PCOS, thyroid imbalance, hormonal issues)
- Uterine or cervical abnormalities (fibroids, polyps, uterine shape issues)
- Fallopian tube blockage or damage
- Endometriosis
- Early menopause (primary ovarian insufficiency)
- Pelvic adhesions or scar tissue
- Cancer or cancer treatments
- Increasing age (especially after 35 for women, 40 for men)
- Smoking or tobacco use
- Alcohol consumption
- Being overweight or underweight
- Poor diet and inactive lifestyle
- Excessive or inadequate exercise
- Chronic medical conditions
For Couples:
- Have regular intercourse around ovulation
